Hi!
I%26#39;m staying at the Monarch Hotel on Geary St and from what I%26#39;ve been able to read here on the boards and other sites it%26#39;s a rough neighborhood. Now I%26#39;m wondering if it%26#39;s safe to take the bus back from let%26#39;s say Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf at night and get off the bus at Van Ness and walk the two blocks back to the hotel? Or should I take a cab? I%26#39;m a big guy, but I get paranoid when walking by myself at night...
Thanks in advance for your help!
Best way of getting to Geary ST/Van Ness at Night?
You should be fine. It can be a bit shady around there, but it%26#39;s not exactly murderer%26#39;s row. Just be aware of your surroundings. If it would put you at ease, by all means take a cab. It%26#39;s not that expensive, compared to having peace of mind.

Great! :) Thanks!
I guess I%26#39;ll look at the neighborhood when I get there and see if it looks safe enough for me or not!
Geary and Van Ness? You should be fine...
Stay on Van Ness Ave., and you%26#39;ll be fine. A bunch of buses run on Van Ness Avenue from the Wharf area. If you go one block east into Polk Street, then it starts getting shady (a lot of bums and homeless), which can be scary, but it should be fine, at least in the daytime.
also, if you take the bus to Union Square, use Van Ness Avenue as your reference point for bus stop and walking.
Thanks for all your replies! I%26#39;m not worried about daytime, partly because it%26#39;s daytime and partly because I won%26#39;t be alone!
So Van Ness is fairly safe? And I think the Monarch Hotel is just like half a block down Geary St, so I guess it should be fine?
the most dangerous part is crossing Van Ness Av. Cars go fast and turn without stopping for you, so be safe and wait for a fresh green and watch for turning traffic.
