First time to San Diego

My wife and I are able to sneek away at the end of may for a much needed vacation.Grandmas got the kids, so it will just be the two of us. We would like a hotel with a great outside pool area to enjoy the sun and just relax with a few cocktails.Would like it to be somewhat quiet, preferable on the water. Any suggestions?

First time to San Diego

I hope you enjoy your visit and return home recharged from a change of scenery and some time to reinvigorate your relationship with your wife.

So here%26#39;s some inside scoop: June Gloom. In May, June to early July as summer begins, San Diego experiences extended marine cloudiness near the coast. It usually burns off by mid day but will return at sunset. So the best bet, to laze around a pool is to find a hotel with a nice pool that is inland (say 10-15 miles away from the shore). That guarantees (hopefully) some daytime sun.

You might want to look into the Rancho Bernardo Inn if that is in your price range. I know others will be able to help out here.

They%26#39;ll warn you that this is %26#39;far out%26#39; and it is maybe 20+ miles from downtown San Diego. We have an excellent freeway system so if you stay away from the rush hours, getting around is very easy.

And don%26#39;t let the gloom scare you off. As was recently said here in this very forum: A gloomy day in San Diego is better than _______. (somewhere else very nice).

First time to San Diego

Checkout the L%26#39;Auberge, right in the quiet (until the fair come mid-June) village of Del Mar. Very calm and peaceful area, wonderful village for shopping, beautiful pool area, lots to do in the general vicinity. http://www.laubergedelmar.com/

If you want a more urban feel, but pretty quiet right in the middle of downtown, then you would probably love the Marriott Marina downtown - really wonderful pool areas; you%26#39;ll feel like you%26#39;re miles away from everything, but if you want there%26#39;s lots to do right there. www.thebigbay.com

I%26#39;m an ex-cheesehead and agree with both posts. If you want a quiet place with better chance for sun yet reasonably close to attractions, Rancho Bernardo Inn is very nice - good restaurants and nice views of the golf course and mountains. Do you golf? I read something about an expansion coming up so you may want to make sure there aren%26#39;t construction issues. There are a few wineries near by, hiking trails, close to Wild Animal Park and not too difficult to get to beach across 78, 56 or 8 freeways from15 or 163. Doubletree Golf Resort in Rancho Penasquitos is another option - can%26#39;t remember pool area though.

Marriott Marina has a great pool (tropical grounds, waterfalls, etc.)and well located for the bay and downtown attractions. It will be more expensive and has a lot of convention crowd so books up fast. Downtown clouds seem to burn off earlier than the beach. It%26#39;s close to airport so you wouldn%26#39;t need a car if you are just hanging around.

It depends on your price range and what else you want to see while you are here. If you don%26#39;t mind a few marine clouds and want ocean front or Mission Bay, post back for other ideas. It%26#39;s hit or miss for beach sun this time of year.

I will say it tootallsd! A gloomy day in San Diego is better than anywhere else in the country!
