where is where in San Francisco?

hi!

i%26#39;m travelling for the 1st time to USA and planning some stay in LA, Vegas and San Francisco..

Trying to connect the places with southwest airlines..

Would anyone be able to tell me if Burbank or Oakland would be a better place to touch down for tourist? If i want to visit places like the Chinatown etc (which are all tourist thingy), which is a better choice and how far away are they situated?

How far away are Oakland and Burbank.

On a shoestring budget, any recommendation on where is a good place to stay (Hotel name, as well as whether its in Oakland or Burbank?)

is getting around easy in San Francisco? cheap?

Thank you very much!

where is where in San Francisco?

Burbank is closest to Los Angeles.

Oakland is closest to San Francisco.

As such, if uyou are taking Southwest Airlines, you will want to fly into Oakland. In the San Francisco area, Southwest Airlines flies into San Jose and into Oakland. Oakland is the closest to San Francisco area.

San Francisco - to walk around - can be quite inexpensive and it has its usual fast food and grocery stores for food, etc. If you enjoy walking you can see a lot of San Francisco just by walking around.

For lodging, you might want to look into the hostel option in San Francisco.

San Francisco can be inexpensive to very very expensive dependent on what you want to do. Enjoy planning your trip

where is where in San Francisco?

Burbank isn%26#39;t remotely near San Francisco. It is in Southern California.

OAK is fine. You can take BART from OAK to save money.

Hotels:

The Powell

The Hotel Des Arts

The Castle Inn

Various ';motor inns'; around the City.

If you really are on a budget, you may try one of the hostels around the City. I am not real firmiliar with them so hopefully someone else can help there.

Getting around is very easy on MUNI and BART. For more information see www.sfmuni.com and www.bart.gov

Either Burbank or Oakland is good for ';all things touristy'; but they are 600 kilometers apart, so very different touristy things. Burbank is near Los Angeles, Oakland is near San Francisco. There are Chinatowns in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, but again these cities are 600 km apart. There are plenty of touristy thingys in both cities.

Yes, Oakland is across the bay from San Francisco, while Burbank is in the San Fernando Valley, just north of LA. Concerning Chinatown, San Francisco%26#39;s, and even Oakland%26#39;s, is a lot better than LA%26#39;s Chinatown. San Francisco and Los Angeles all have their share of tourist attractions, but many of San Francisco%26#39;s can be seen without a car, while you can%26#39;t get around LA to see all the tourist attractions without a car. And driving in LA is only for good drivers. And remember, gas is expensive here nowadays. And to help you decide between spending more time in SF or LA, SF is the one of the top tourist cities in the US (either SF or NYC). However, if you%26#39;re into nightlife, beaches, or shopping, then LA would be your place.

Hello all!

Thanks for all the information, i am beginning to understand more about SF :P

i have initially thought that Burbank is in SF, no wonder i can%26#39;t find it in the maps.. haha

Ok, it%26#39;s more or less settled that I will fly in from OAK, will anybody be able to recomment a few hotel that is in the price range of below $100 yet decent? Not dorm motels as i am travelling with mum.. she kinda freak out at the idea of a dorm providing motel..

from OAK to the central, how much does it cost and time needed? any shuttle service at OAK?

I have wanted to book Miyjila hotel but read lotsa negative reports on this hotel.. is it really that bad? was attracted by its location..

Monarch is a bad choice too?

thanks, appreciate all the help given. :)

Never heard of the Miyjila, and it doesn%26#39;t come up on Trip Advisor%26#39;s hotel search (the search field located on the upper left-hand side).

The Monarch has only a few reviews, and I%26#39;m not familiar with it. A traveler who just recently posted asked about the location (Geary St. near Van Ness Ave.), but it%26#39;s decently located on a good transit line. It%26#39;s not really near Union Square, but it%26#39;s not far out, either.

I you wanted to visit Chinatown, you%26#39;d just take the 38 Geary bus all the way to the point it crosses Market Street, then walk up Grant Ave. If you wanted to visit the ';other Chinatown,'; so to speak, you%26#39;d get on the 38 Geary bus in the opposite direction and ride it out to the Richmond District, and walk a block to Clement Street.

Getting around San Francisco is easy on public transit. The SF Municipal Railway system is easy to use if you buy a transit map. Muni sells PassPorts for unlimited travel in 1, 3 and 7-day increments. See www.muni.com

Getting to SF from Oakland airport is also relatively cheap using the regional transit system, BART. It%26#39;s convenient as long as you%26#39;re not a heavy packer and can carry your luggage. You%26#39;d have to transfer to the #38 Geary bus from BART in order to get to the Monarch. If you chose another budget hotel in the Union Square area, such as the Stratford or the Powell Hotel, you%26#39;d be able to walk from the Powell Street BART station.
