Hi myself and a friend (two single 26 year old guys) are flying out on the 11th July to LAX from England and we are planning on doing a mini road trip down to San Diego and back up before flying onto Las Vegas on the 21st July.
We are looking at hiring cars at the moment but are unsure on what to go for, we were planning on going for a Mustang soft-top but we don%26#39;t to stand out too much as most of the time we will have our belongs in the trunk. Is car crime rate hire or should we be ok with this car?
Also we are palnning on stopping of at Huntington, Newport and Laguna Beach , staying one night at each before driving down to spend the weekend at San Diego and then driving back up to visit Santa Monica and Santa Barbara before flying to Vegas. We were wondering if anyone could suggest places to stay and visit we would like to meet and hang out with people of a similar age and any advice would be great - also tell us if we are making a mistake in doing the trip this way?
Thank you
PS - The only hotel we have booked at the moment is The Hard Rock in Las Vegas - as people said this is a most for our age group. I hope they were correct.
Need of help for our road trip.....Yes, you%26#39;ll have fun at the Hard Rock, but it will be HOT outside - so hot that I doubt you%26#39;ll be able to go outside at all.
You can hire a convertable - don%26#39;t worry about carjacking. That sounds like the perfect car for your road trip. Also, it sounds like you%26#39;ve got it well figured out, although I would leave out Newport Beach and Santa Barbara (I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll have the time).
In terms of where to go, in each beach town, if you%26#39;re staying at the beach, you%26#39;ll find the hot spots just when you%26#39;re walking. However, you%26#39;ll have to book your hotels right away, or risk not finding anywhere to stay. July is a very busy month at the beach.
Need of help for our road trip.....thank you so much for your help and advice - I will speak to my friend today so we can start booking hotels. I have been looking at the Embassy Suites San Diego Bay, do you know what this hotel is like or could be advise another one.
Also - I notice that you%26#39;ve left Hollywood out of your plan. Is that on purpose? Do you only want to be at the beach? I would add a night in LA, so that you can stay in West Hollywood - preferably on Sunset Blvd. That%26#39;s where all the bars and clubs are.... Also, be sure to add a night in Santa Monica - lots of bars and clubs there, too. All are walking distance from most hotels.
For San Diego, you might want to look at the Pacific Beach/Mission Beach area for hotels. A lot of Young crowds in this area especially during the summer.
Newport and Laguna are always cool places to be! I probably pick to stay at Laguna Beach. Any hotel on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach should be fine as there%26#39;s a free shuttle that runs from July-Sept that goes North and South of Pacific Coast Highway and stops at downtown, the Main Beach, Aliso Creek Beach, and Heisler Park.
Youre right in picking the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, The Rio is another place.
Stay at the Hyatt in Huntington Beach. Most of the other resorts in Orange County cater to a more middle-aged crowd but as far as nice hotels go, the Hyatt has a pretty young feel and is right on the beach. Also, you might like the Sheraton Delfina or Viceroy in Santa Monica, they both have a kind of hip, young feel to them.
Mustangs do not draw much attention in terms of being target cars. I have a convertible myself and have never had my car broken into *knocks on wood* you should be fine, just use common sense, lock your car and if provided, make use of the valet key.
It was interesting to note that yesterday%26#39;s report of the top 10 cities of cars getting broken into(in the U.S.), LA wasn%26#39;t even on that list! The only Southern California city in that list was San Diego, and they were ranked 8th I belive. I wouldn%26#39;t worry about a Mustang. Lately, every other car I see around freeways and sidestreets are Mercedes, BMW, Lexus. More and more Range Rover lately.
If you do stay in Laguna Beach, Laguna Riviera Resort is great! But book ahead as it%26#39;s popular. It%26#39;s oceanfront and reasonable rates. Laguna Beach during the summer attracts all age ranges esp during the summertime and it%26#39;s a gorgeous beach. I do agree though Huntington Beach has a majority younger crowd. And I agree that PB(Pacific Beach) would be the place for you guys to go in San Diego.
Have fun!
I%26#39;d also like to add, I%26#39;ve lived here most of my life. Driven all over LA, Orange County, San Diego for many years and never encountered any car crimes. Take the previous post advice, use common sense, lock your car and you should be fine.
all I can add, besides The Hard Rock is Awesome is...
Huntington, Newport and Laguna beach are somewhat close
to one another. You may want to get a hotel just in Laguna Beach
for those days and take the small rode trip to the other beaches.
You might save some money and you don%26#39;t have to pack everyday.
PS You should check out Studio 54 at the MGM in Vegas. Lots of hotties and fun times, We were just there.
Thank you all so much for your help and comments, you have all been very helpful.
Hi everyone, Thank you once again for your help and advice. We have now booked our trip and I was hoping for your opinion of our trip - that is if you have time.
We arrive on the 11th July and we are staying at the Marina Del Rey hotel as we saw that this hotel was close to the airport and we didn%26#39;t fancy driving after drinking on the plane.
The next morning we will be popping up the car at the hotel ( we did go for a soft-top after your advice) and then we are spending 3 nights at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, we choose this hotel as it seem close to Huntington and not to far from Laguna. I hope I am correct?.
Then we will be travelling down to San Diego and spending 2 nights( the weekend) at the Hotel Solamar, we were told that this hotel is in a great location for the nightlufe, again is this correct?
Then we are driving back up to Santa Monica and we will be speanding two nights at the Sheraton Delfina, this wasn%26#39;t our first choice hotel but the Lowes Santa Monica wasn%26#39;t available. I have read some bad reports about the Delfina, do you guys know much about this hotel?
Then we are spending our last two nights in LA, staying at the Beverly Hills Loews hotel where we will be dropping off the car when you arrive on our frist morning. My friend who I am travelling with didn%26#39;t believe we would need the car in Beverly Hills and Hollywood, I hope we haven%26#39;t made a mistake by doing this?
Then on the morning of the 21st July we are flying form LAX to Vegas and then staying at the Hard Rock for 4 nights before flying home to London on the 25th July.
Once again I would like to say thank you for everyone that has happen us plan this trip and hopefully hear from you all soon.
