Hi,
I will be travelling to San Diego for 7 days in October and wondered if anybody could give me advice on hotels and locations around San Diego?
I am a wheelchair user so would like to choose a hotel which has bars and restaurants close to it.
The main reason is I do not want to have to use cabs every night if we wish to go out for meals so would like somewhere that is well located, with restaurants and bars within close pushing distance.
There are several hotels I am considering but they are in different locations; some are at the Old Gaslamp Quarter while the others are in San Diego Bay on Shelter Island
Are either of these areas a good choice?
I would appreciate advise from from fellow Trip Avisors who have been to San Diego.
Thanks,

Hello travel!
I%26#39;ll give you some advice. First off, I%26#39;m not a wheelchair user so I may not be as %26#39;aware%26#39; of the details as I need to be.
I would choose the Gaslamp Quarter for the sole reason that many restaurants and shopping options are within blocks of most of the hotels. Try the Solamar, Hilton Garden Inn for example. Something different every night -- no more than 3 blocks.
Most of this area has been redeveloped so there are curb cuts at nearly every corner. The Americans with Disability Act also helps in terms of access. New and significantly remodeled construction needs ramps, wider doors, etc. At most any hotel you should be able to ask for (AND GET) a handicapped acccessible room to make things a bit easier.
I hope you enjoy your trip. I%26#39;ve been Liverpool several times -- my company has a factory in the village of Knowsley and I often stay downtown at the Marriott. I tend to bang my head against fire exit signs and door thresholds, but what the heck.

I agree with tootall ,the gaslamp will allow you to go out the door of your hotel and be down the street from restaurants bars etc. If you are on Shelter Island you will have to take a taxi unless you eat at your hotel.
I agree with the previous posters that Gaslamp is a great choice. But there are other locations downtown around San Diego Bay that are equally convenient. I know that the Little Italy area is also well suited to wheelchair access, and also has many restaurants and bars from which to choose. Basically anywhere in the general downtown vicinity would be good for you - Gaslamp, Little Italy, or downtown - almost anywhere near San Diego Bay. As you get closer to choosing specific hotels, please post the names so we can help you narrow the choices.
Hi,
Many thanks to you all for the information. It has given me ideas already and I will give details of specific hotels I am thinking of booking.
Thanks.
