coming over to san d on the 2nd nov, what time will it be dark.
I ask this only cus flying in at 6.30pm, pick up car and drive to hotel after a 14 hour flight from uk
just one silly questionIt will be dark when you arrive. By then daylight savings time (summer time) will be over. It gets dark around 5PM in the winter.
If your hotel is in the downtown district, mission valley or even La Jolla you should be fine. Highways and streets are generally well marked and equipped with street lights.
just one silly questionThere are many sunset calculators on internet. This is an easy to use one from the US Naval Observatory:
aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html
Interesting tidbit there Santa Barbara. The daylight calculator says darkness at 04:57 PM. I think that qualifies as %26#39;close to 5PM%26#39;. Sorry for my inaccuracy but I still think my answer is correct.
BTW: The USNO website is blocked in the PRC.
Oggy
We flew into LAX and collected the hire car to drive to San Diego. I was a bit bothered about setting off in the dark. I had convinced myself I was going to take a wrong turn off the highway, drive into some ghetto and end up minus me clothes, the car etc.
The sun was just setting as we left LA (think it was around half 5 ish). It was dark by the time we reached LA city limits, but we found our hotel, no problems (Humphreys on shelter island)
We drove all over on our 2 weeks there, day and night. I found it a real easy city to navigate. Very courteous local drivers who seemed very forgiving of stupid British people.
Sure you won%26#39;t have any problems.
In Need... I just read your fudge posting.
But seriously, I think you watch too many movies. America is not one giant crack house, shooting gallery or gangland. Really, don%26#39;t go scaring the natives or the visitors.
Oggymate: Ask lots of questions at the hire car counter. Get maps. Have some water and a rest at the airport before heading over to pick-up the car to decompress from the flight(s).
You%26#39;ll be fine.
thanks guys im now at ease!
Toot
I wouldn%26#39;t want to put any off from travelling to the states. I have been lucky enough to travel to the US many times over the last 10 years.
On every trip, I seem to have a knack of finding myself in areas that tourists perhaps shouldn%26#39;t go to. At no time have I ever felt in any danger. My own stupidity and curiosity gets the better of me. Certainly in my experience, there%26#39;s no more risk, crack-heads or gun crime than you would find in most of our major cities these days.
Given the opportunity, I would move to the US in a flash (well, perhaps a plane). Old George doesn%26#39;t seem to keen on handing out them green cards though.
