My boyfriend are trying to plan a road trip along PCH from LA to San Jose over Memorial day weekend. Any suggestions on an itinerary or places to stop? We%26#39;ll be leaving Friday afternoon through Monday. Thanks!
LA to San Jose road trip over Memorial day Weekend
I%26#39;d plan to stay in Cambria its a nice arty town with moderately priced restaurants not far from the Hearst Castle with several motels just north of the town.
Book your Hearst Castle tour in advance.
You should go to the men%26#39;s restrooms at the Madonna Inn - just out of San Luis Obispo on Rte 101 - I%26#39;d encourage you to stick to the coast - so this will be a very slight detour.
The road gets narrow around Big Sur - allow time to be stuck behind a camper van - south of San Luis Obispo its pretty good.
If you choose to stay by the coast to Monterey then stop at Nepenthe restaurant for good views near Big Sur - the beach can be a bit tricky to find - there are places you should book near there if you want to stay there - else Pacific Grove end of Monterey is a good place with lots of places to stay.
A little known place to stay which you would have to book is the Asilomar Conference Center - it may or may not be full - but sometimes you can get a great study bedroom on a campus that has paths over dunes to the beach. Its between Carmel and Monterey at the north end of the 17-mile drive. If you don%26#39;t want to pay the fee - then park near Asilomar and walk on the beach towards Pebble Beach - you probably won%26#39;t make it all the way walking to the Lone Cypress but you can get some great fresh air and views.
There is also a rollerblading/bike path in Monterey and Pacific Grove - you can rent a bicycle made for 2 and go along past the Aquarium and other sights to the Pacific Grove lighthouse near where John Denver%26#39;s ultralight plane crashed into the sea.

Another couple of thoughts:
1. For real romance the Madonna Inn has rooms like a cave but they will be booked up by now! All the rooms are romantic and different and not cheap.
2. Just south of San Luis Obispo there are a couple of good Best Westerns with sea views. Shore Cliff Lodge and Pismo Beach.
3. You might want to pick up the Best Places to Kiss in CA book
4. Pismo Beach is a long beach for a romantic walk
5. Morro Bay has a big rock and you can stop for a break there.
