Hotel Choice: Chancellor / Strafford / Hotel Union Square...

Hi!

I am booking for 2 couples (early 60+) and are looking for budget hotel that is close to public transportation. I have done some research on this site and it seems these 4 hotels are around $80-$110 at Union Square (which seems to be close to everything).

Chancellor seems to be the best in class but it%26#39;s about $20-30 more than other.

All they are looking for is a basic clean, convenient and safe location.

Since budget is a concern, is there any local out there that can tell me if the other ones are ok?

Many thanks!

I really, really recommend Priceline.com. You can choose Union Square West or East as a location, and you can get the Hyatt or another 4 star hotel for $80.00-$90.00 a night. There is no way a 4 star hotel isn%26#39;t going to be safe, and you%26#39;ll have a really nice spot. It is true that you won%26#39;t know the EXACT hotel before your bid is accepted, but you will know it will be 4* (if that%26#39;s what you bid for, and I would) and you will know the location--Union Square East or West or Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf or Financial District--whatever you choose. It will be in the area you bid for; they ABSOLUTELY don%26#39;t ';switch'; you from one area to another or from a 4* down to a 3*.

Do your research first on www.biddingfortravel.com. Look under San Francisco. At the top of the page that opens, you%26#39;ll see a list of the hotels Priceline uses in each location and you%26#39;ll see the * category for each; you%26#39;ll even see links back to reviews on trip advisor.

Then look at their forum for San Francisco; people will have reported back what hotels they got for what bids--but $80.00-$90.00 a night is typical for a 4*.

Then go to the Priceline site and look at their maps to see where they are putting you in the various areas. (They won%26#39;t show the actual hotel location, of course, but you%26#39;ll see the areas are acceptable--AND THE 4* HOTELS ARE LOCATED WHERE YOU WANT TO BE.) San Francisco is an easy city to get around in; you%26#39;ll have public transportation anyplace. And Priceline will save you many, many dollars.--no, I don%26#39;t work for them. :)

In my opinion, I would break down and spend the extra money for the Chancellor. It is by far the best of the group and in my opinion, well worth the extra money. I spoke with the manager regarding the hotel, just so I had information for myself and he was so helpful at answering my questions and very friendly. I really recommend contacting him directly and seeing if he can come up with something. Another thing, a visitor from this forum recently stayed at the hotel and they had no problem matching the lower rate s/he found on Expedia which was quite a bit lower than the rate they had originally quoted her.

All of that said, I too would offer priceline as a suggestion. If you bid apprx. $90 a night for only 4 star hotels in the Union Square area, you are not going to get stuck in a dump. In my opinion, the gamble with priceline in that situation would pay off. I wouldn%26#39;t want to risk some of the ';budget'; hotels.

Hope this helps!

You are obviously aware that the Chancellor is a cut above the others in MANY ways.

Priceline can work for you.

I am not a fan of Priceline simply because I like to know exactly where I%26#39;m going and what I%26#39;m getting.

I%26#39;m sure the Chancellor will match a cost on Expedia or other legitimate website.

Why dont you contact Wes Tyler direct with your costs and see what he can come up with to help you out.

Saks was refering to me . The Chancellor Hotel will match Expedia or any other internet sites prices . No questions asked . This hotel is good value , is in a great location , has fantastic service and has nice clean rooms . If you are not looking for anything fancy this is the place to stay . I hope I get a discount next time I stay at The Chancellor from all the recommendations and advertisment I am giving this hotel . lol .

I used Priceline last night and was able to get the Marriott Downtown (in USE area) for $85/night [June 8-10]. I also did my research before I bid - I looked up the most common 4* hotels that have been being booked via Priceline lately and they are all near Union Square and have quick access to transportation.

Of course, you want know exactly which hotel, but as previously posted the RATING and AREA will be what you request.

You all are wonderful! Many thanks for all your help and suggestions!!! :-)
