Wineries

Will be staying in Carlsbad week of Oct.7th. Can anyone recommend some good wine tasting places? Will have a car, and would like to make a day trip out of this.

Thanks.

Hi

My fiance and I were in San Diego the last week of June, 2006 (visiting a friend in Carlsbad actually) and spent the last two days of our trip in Temecula, the winery area of Southern California. It is almost exactly 1 hour inland from San Diego (so maybe slightly farther from Carlsbad, but not by much, an incredibly easy day trip). We stayed at the Loma vista bed and breakfast, which is on a hill overlooking all the wineries, if you decide to stay over night. We had a fantastic time! Here%26#39;s the winery website: http://www.temeculawines.org/

Falkner Winery has amazing wines, Hart, Stuart, Bella Vista and Maurice Car%26#39;rie (where he proposed). Callaway is the most well known, but in my opinion could be skipped if you%26#39;re in a rush. They also do winery tours there for free, twice a day I think.

They are all about 2 minutes from each other along the same stretch, 10 - 15 wineries at least. Almost all of them have gorgeous picnic areas with great views.

Note: Tastings ran between $8-$13 per person, which I thought was a little steep, however you get to keep the winegalsses (all nice).

Don%26#39;t miss Falkner and Hart for good, dry reds.

Thanks, appreciate the info. Will definately try the ones you mentioned. We are planning on only doing 1 day, so I guess we will have to choose the best!!. That is a little steep for tastings. The wineries here on Long island only charge like $3 for 6 or more tastings. Like the idea of picnic areas. We like to stop and have some cheese, and fruit and sip a bottle.

You could always SHARE a tasting so the price would not be so steep.

I hav enever been interested in buying the glass that I use for tasting.

This is true. How many different wines do they give for the price. Like I said, by me, last weekend, it was $3 for 6 wines. But they did not keep count and we had 12 each!! That is worth it!!

I personally do not like Maurice Carrie%26#39;s wines, BUT they have baked brie in a bread bowl, so it%26#39;s a nice place to stop and have a picnic. Also they didn%26#39;t used to charge at all for their tastings.

Kat, Thanks for the info
