Drive - Yosemite South to Big Sur

My wife and I are planning to drive from Yosemite (South entrance) to Big Sur (stay for 2 nights), has anyone made this trip? I%26#39;m concerned it%26#39;ll take the whole day to make this drive. Our other option is to make the drive from the Yosemite West entrance and stay one night in Santa Cruz and then eventually make our way to Big Sur and stay for 1 night. Does anyone have any recommendations for a trip like this? Thanks!

Drive - Yosemite South to Big Sur

I%26#39;ve done it before in reverse (Big Sur to Yosemite) around 6 years ago, I%26#39;d guess it was around 5 hours, not too painful. I remember having plenty of daylight in Yosemite to find a campground when I got there.

It%26#39;s a decent drive. NOt overly long. There is nothing to see between Yosemite and like maybe Monterey. The whole trip Fish Camp to Big Sur should take about 4 hours. With no stops. If you leave early you could stop in Monterey or Carmel for lunch or if you leave late you could stop there for dinner. There are more dining spots outside Big Sur.

Thanks both for the feedback. I%26#39;m thinking that we%26#39;ll stop somewhere in Carmel for dinner. I%26#39;m quite excited about this trip!

We did this trip last summer as part of a three week tour of California. It didn%26#39;t look as though it would take the whole day (but hey, we%26#39;re English, first time in Ca, and it%26#39;s tricky judging those distances!), so we tried to cram quite a bit in. We started the day by canoeing down the Merced, then drove south to Mariposa Grove to see the sequoias, then headed west. We phoned ahead to our hotel (Big Sur River Inn) as we realised we would be later than expected, they were fine, and we got there at 9pm. But what a day!

That sounds like a cool plan. I was think%26#39;n we%26#39;d go rafting on the Tuolumne and then head to Mariposa Grove, but the Merced is a good alternative. Thanks!

Hi

I just did this last week. You probably have enough info from other posts. but since it%26#39;s fresh in my mind!

It was fine but it is a long drive. I like driving and you see some great scenery, so it%26#39;s really a question of how much you mind being in the car. I took it easy, got a little lost once or twice, stopped for lunch and made it in about 7 hours. I left Yosemite Village at 9am on a Thursday morning. Left via the Yosemite South entrance (no choice since the road west to Merced was shut) and got to Big Sur area circa 4pm. It would probably be quicker to leave via the west entrance, but both routes converge eventually anyway.

One thing to bear in mind - it takes a lot longer to get out of the Yosemite area than than you think it will. Partly because you are still in the mountains for a long time, so the roads are very winding and slow, and you%26#39;ll get stuck behind countless RVs!

It%26#39;s perfectly doable by realistically you need to plan for more or less the whole day in transit.

Wow stylus that%26#39;s a mighty long time to do that drive. What were your stops?

When we left through the south entrance to Monterey we were staying the night at Fish Camp so I can%26#39;t comment about the added time to get to the south entrance from the valley during a time when everyone has to choose either 120 or 41 to get out due to various road closures. I%26#39;m sure that added to the long drive out. At any rate if you are already at the south entrance it should take about 4 hours to get to Big Sur unless you are stopping along the way.
