Can anyone who%26#39;s been there tell me what the neighborhood around 1015 W. 23rd st. (90007) is like? My daughter will be moving there and I need to know if this is a safe location. Many thanks!
neighborhood quality in Los Angeles?
Why is she moving to that location? Is there a specific reason?
neighborhood quality in Los Angeles?
I assume your daughter is attending USC, which is located to the south. This neighborhood has a lot of student housing. The area is a real mix. The 23rd Street Theater is on the other side of Vermont. There%26#39;s a real classy bed %26amp; breakfast on 23rd near Figueroa. There%26#39;s a Catholic girls college a couple of blocks away (Mount St. Mary%26#39;s?). The area around 23rd %26amp; Union has some surprisingly nice buildings. But, it also has a lot of cheap rental housing too. So the area is full of Spanish speaking immigrants and businesses which cater to them. If she were moving to the area north of the 10 freeway or further west or east, I%26#39;d say she is moving into a tough neighborhood. Here, I%26#39;m not so sure. If she%26#39;s going to school at USC, then I%26#39;m sure she can get good advice about the area.
HTH.
I agree with hitchkennedy. Looking at the map, there are some areas around there that can be tough. If she is moving to go to USC, there are campus housing and I%26#39;m sure she can get some good advice from the school of where to best live around there. As far as USC, a variety of my coworkers(and one of my good friends) have gone to this campus all the time(day or evening classes) when they were getting their MBAs. Never had any issues. And it%26#39;s a very good school.
If your daughter is attending USC, by law all Universities are now required to inform people of crime statistics around the campuses.
yes- she will be a grad student (geology) at USC and is living in Germany at present, so it%26#39;s not possible for her to visit the campus anytime soon. We are trying to get a feel for what the surrounding areas are like in terms of safely and convenience. Any further advice is appreciated, as USC seems slow in sending their materials (not for another few weeks). Thanks!
I really wouldn%26#39;t worry about it. My wife and three kids all live nearby in downtown. We love it. Concerns about safety are overstated. A lot of people who don%26#39;t live or know the immediate area will have a lot of fear. Historically, much of this fear was legitimate and based upon very real concerns. Fifteen years ago, I would have a different opinion. A lot has changed during this time and the city is measurably much safer. I%26#39;m surprised that USC is not more quick to speak to these issues.
My only concern would be if she decided to live very far from campus and she spent an inordinate amount of time commuting. The zen of happiness in L.A. is living close to your work. Certainly, for starting out, I think living near the campus is a good idea.
Regardless, I think your daughter has every right to be excited. Los Angeles is a wonderful place to live.
I am planning to visit LA convention center this weekend and am planning to stay in Hollywood Inn Express South in N Alvarado Street. I am told that this is one of the toughest neighbourhoods and people get mugged INSIDE the hotel. Is this true? would appreciate a quick response to see if I need to rebook. thanks sd
My opinion (having graduated from USC) is:
The area is a residential area (narrow streets without a lot of traffic, especially in the evening). If your daughter plans on walking to and from the campus. alone, late at night, I%26#39;d re-think it. The odds are slim that she could experience any problems but it is possible (and has happened over the years).
If, on the other hand, she plans to drive to and from campus (on the days where she plans on returning late in the evening), then she shouldn%26#39;t have any problems.
Candidly, USC is surrounded on most of its sides by bad areas. The University has meticulously bought up the real estate which surrounds the campus so that they have a buffer zone between the campus and the community.
The last tine I inquired about housing in the campus area (about 4 years ago) I was shocked at how expensive it was. There are many, many communities within a 10-20 minute commute from USC which are nicer and have better services (shopping, etc). The area around USC relies on the shopping center across the street from the campus which is an ok shopping center but nothing great. If your daughter is looking to buy clothes, for example, she would probably venture elsewhere.
When I attended USC, I lived in Koreatown (the area surrounding Wilshire Bl and Normandie Ave) and enjoyed it very much.
Hope this is helpful.
