Nightlife in the big cities

We%26#39;ve been to US before but was in touristy hell in Orlando and we found the nightlife a bit odd. We%26#39;re all booked up for a road trip at the end of June, and are hoping we will find some decent places to go out for an evening.

Any recommendations for good nights out in San Francisco, San Diego and Hollywood/LA area? Ideas for streets/areas to visit where we can stroll about looking at restaurant menus and drop in on a few bars?

We are mid-twenties couple (Sounds like a dating ad), looking for somewhere lively but not really into trendy dance clubs or cheesy discos. Like places you can wear jeans, play indie type music, but not scary dives.

Please save me from the comforting lure of a English/irish theme pub!

I don%26#39;t know about LA(it%26#39;s a different world) but in SanDiego and inSanFrancisco relaxed and jeans are appropriate in most places.

I know people will tell you their favorite places but for specific lists of who is playing where try: www.sfbg.com for SanFrancisco

and www.sdreader.com for SanDiego. I f you are coming during the summer there will be lots of outdoor concerts too.

LA is a young town. this is from our FAQs Sticky, at the top of the Los Angeles forum - and yes, jeans are worn here.

Jeans are worn all over LA! All of the beach communities are very laid back. Santa Monica has a bunch of different places to go to for good nightlife.

In San Diego the Gas Lamp district sounds like the place for you, with many restaurants to choose from, and menus posted, with really good hostesses selling the items listed. We ate at something called Aquius (?). Sorry I forget the entire name, and it was wonderful. Lobster pasta yum. Also lots of nice shops and a few bars.

I am out of it for San Francisco, accept the Castro which is the gay district, but still fun for non gays. Good Irish pubs with mature crowds, and good restaraunts.
