I have heard that the produce market in Chinatown is very interesting. Can anyone tell me exactly where it is?
TIA
Chinatown Produce Market
You are probably referring to a stretch of Stockton St, between roughly Clay and Broadway. Stockton is 1 block parralel to Grant (west). There isn%26#39;t just 1 market. There are several bustling markets, a beehive of activity. It can be an interesting and colorful experience.
Chinatown Produce Market
You might want to check out the ';other China Town';. Clement Street is a bustling place where many of SF%26#39;s Asian community lives, works, eats, and shops. There are great produce markets found there.
The little family run grocery stores are all interesting, and pretty good deals. It might be because of some combination of rent control (many of them are easily 30-70 years under the same owners) %26amp; non-union situation. People who live in walking distance have it made, in terms of fresh grocery needs. Everything is there, from groceries, to candy stores, to pearl tea drink bars, to bakeries, to delis, to butchers, to restaurants, and non-food related shops. It%26#39;s a throwback to what cities were like before cars, shopping carts, parking lots and megagrocery stores.
The Stockton Ave strip is interesting. It and its sidewalks are very crowded. You%26#39;ll be wading through masses of people. Welcome to China. If you want to make any progress on foot, you%26#39;ll want to get on the parallel streets just one block one way or the other.
Stockton STREET, between Sacramento Street and Broadway is the main produce market street, as the previous poster mentioned.
From downtown, you can take the #30 Stockton bus, or simply walk straight up Stockton Street, through the tunnel, into Chinatown.
