San Diego or Lake Tahoe?

My wife and I have 3 days to kill in California at the start of June. We will be departing Bakersfield which seems to be between SD and Tahoe and just wondered what the relative merits of each place were, what there is to do etc. Any suggestions?

San Diego or Lake Tahoe?

Lake Tahoe is a resort community in the mountains. The lake is deep and cold. It is surrounded by forest land. There are trails for hiking and biking. There are boat trips and river rafting trips. Since tha lake lies on the border between CA and Nevada there are also casinos.

SanDiego is a city with all the activities and amenities you might imagine. There are beaches ,mts, desert within an hours ride. There are water and land activities. Balboa Park with museums and gardens. There are theaters and restaurants and music venues. There are historic areas.

You have to decide if you want to visit another city on your trip or if you want to be in the country.

San Diego or Lake Tahoe?

Thanks riffsmom, we are doing some ranching outside of Bakersfield so we might be ready for a bit of life in the city after all the fresh air, mountains and horses but I%26#39;ve heard so much about Lake Takoe that I%26#39;m still kind of drawn in that direction and would hate to miss it. I take it that the casinos and such like aren%26#39;t too obtrusive otherwise we would be as well going down the city route.

Here%26#39;s some more information to help you break a tie.

Lake Tahoe is beautiful in June. If it makes any difference, it%26#39;ll be more crowded on weekends.

In San Diego, Sunday June 4 is the date of the Rock N Roll Marathon, one other smaller marathon and some school graduations. The heart of the city%26#39;s going to have lots of weird traffic routings and it%26#39;s going to be a pain to get hotel rooms.

If you haven%26#39;t been to any mts. on your trip then go to Lake Tahoe. I grew up spending summers at a lake in northern New York state and we looked all over Ca to find a similar lake and Lake Tahoe was the closest we could find.

The start of June is not at all crowded in Tahoe. The crowds come for the 4th of July and then again about mid July through August. June is pretty quiet unless you are spending your time at south shore on the weekends. It is also much cooler in June than July and August. This is really when you realize you are in the mountains as the season is much shorter than the valley only an hour away. It is really beautiful in Tahoe but this year we will see many more mosquitos due to the long wet winter and late spring. There is still enough snow to ski in Squaw Valley and though the ski season at Heavenly and other Tahoe ski resorts is over there is still alot of snow. Check out the web cams for Heavenly

If the snow is still on the ground then some hikes might be out but then the waterfalls at Eagle Falls and Cascade Falls will be pretty great!
