Stay in what part of town?

I will be visiting SF for 2 nights and was wondering how I was to go about picking an area to stay in. Nob Hill? Downtown? Bay Area? or Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf?

I%26#39;ve never been, so I don%26#39;t know where safe areas are and what areas are centrally located for visiting sights. Not really sure what we will be visiting at this point. I am open to suggestions.

My daughter wants to see Golden Gate Bridge, so I%26#39;d like to visit the park there, maybe Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf.

What about Embarcadero? Is that a good place to stay or just visit?

Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

Stay in what part of town?

Here are the top places tourists choose to stay:

1. Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf (higher hotel prices here)

2. Union Square (more varied prices here)

3. Embarcadero

4. Van Ness / Lombard Street corridor for travelers with cars who need motor lodges and free parking (though some without cars choose this area, too). Varied prices here.

There are numerous posts that debate the pros and cons of the areas. People with kids often like FW. People w/o kids like FW. Locals mostly recommend Union Square, but not always.

Do a search for key words mentioned here to see the discussions and decide where you fall in the spectrum.

If you%26#39;re still confused, make a new post and include information about yourself and your traveling preferences and the ages of the people in your party, and anything else that might indicate the kinds of things you like to do on vacations. Some people really hate being surrounded touristy-chains while on vacation, some don%26#39;t mind them, for example.

Sorry, forgot to include Nob Hill.

5. Nob Hill - Old line SF hotels at the top of Nob Hill. (Remember, when you walk downhill, you will need to walk back uphill -- or catch a bus or cable car).

I like to recommend the Embarcadero because of it%26#39;s proximity to all kinds of public transportation, the views of the bay, and it%26#39;s walkable to so many places I like to go.

Union Square is still the best and most central place to stay.

Centre of shopping - theatres - restaurants - cable cars - transport and easy walk to Chinatown - North Beach .

The Embarcadero is fast becoming another good area to stay with the reinvention of the Ferry Building and new Hotels in the area.

Union Square is what I typically recommend in general. If people are traveling with small children, I will recommend Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf, but that%26#39;s usually the only time.

The Hotel Vitale is the hotel I would recommend if you stay at the Embarcadero.

Union Square or Nob Hill. Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf is cheesy.

I also recommend Union Square because it%26#39;s central to everything. You can get to the Wharf and the Embarcadero, along with most other parts of town. If you stay at the Wharf, you%26#39;ll still have to go to the Union Square area before going out to any other parts of the City.

If I was traveling with my teenage daughter, I would definitely choose Union Square for all of the great shopping and excitement of the area. We were considering an overnight stay at the Hotel Vitale which would be my first choice when traveling with just the two of us. The hotel is so serene and Zen-like. The St. Francis or the Hotel Palomar both sound nice for Union Square.

We also loved the ambiance at the Ritz, and I would also love to stay at the Four Seasons sometime. Hvae fun! The Ferry Building is very fun with lots of cool foodie things to purchase there. :)

i recommend staying at union square as well, more choices in resturants and shopping. I also found it to be much colder at the wharf do to the find, so not good for walking around at night. do go see the wharf and the sea lions, and go to the bridge and walk across (at least part way). since you will only be there a short time, you may want to take a tour of the city or the double decker bus you can get on and off, so you can see the most things.

We%26#39;ve just returned from San Fransisco and stayed at the Columbus Motor Inn. I though it was a good location, walking distance to Fishermans Wharf (although cheesy but still fun) and close to transport, although we walked most of the time. There is also a bike rental shop nearby should you feel inclined to cycle the Golden Gate Bridge.
