We will be spending 4-5 days in SF this July and we%26#39;re having a hard time finding a place to stay that is truly ';pet -friendly';. Most hotels that accept pets aren%26#39;t anywhere near grassy areas for our girl to do her ';business'; and most vacation rentals don%26#39;t accept pets.
It%26#39;s also hard to tell from maps where there may be grassy areas or parks for her -- and I can%26#39;t imagine having to walk 3-4 blocks (or more) when I%26#39;ve really gotta go! Are there any (reasonably priced) hotels (under $250./nt) that fit the bill? Please help with any ideas!

In terms of green spaces, I think the motor lodges around the Marina District, i.e., the Lombard Street corridor and side streets, would offer decent walks, from the Marina Green to Crissy Field, to above Fort Mason. It%26#39;s also not in the middle of high rises.
We were in SF w/ our golden retriever in July 2004 and stayed at the Laurel Inn in the Presidio Heights/Pacific Heights area. Very highly recommend it! There%26#39;s a city library with a nice lawn about 1 - 1 1/2 blocks away that was frequented by locals with dogs. The neighborhood is very upscale with lots of beautiful victorian homes and buildings. We stayed in one of their city view king rooms with a kitchenette, which I see on their website is still well under $200/night. It was great to have the kitchenette with the dog and it was a large, comfortable room. They also have a free underground parking garage, a real bonus in SF! There was also a large gourmet market a few blocks away with a huge selection of freshly prepared reheatable entrees for those evenings when we didn%26#39;t feel like going out to dinner. I recommend calling them rather than booking online as they gave me a little lower rate than the one quoted online and I was able to verify a quiet room location, etc.
I would second the Argonaut at Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf. That really should be perfect if you want to do typical tourist things. And there is literally a park across the street, just steps from the hotel entrance.
Laurel Inn or The Argonaut are both good choices and good for dogs.
The Argo is probably a bit more convenient to the sights but more than you probably want to spend. There is a green space to the left of the hotel and if you walk 10 minutes to the west along the water and up a big hill, you will come to a huge green space which is part of Ft. Mason with great views. Although technically not an off-leash area, us dog owners do it all the time while keeping an eye out for the park police.
Another option is Hotel Del Sol which I think is dog friendly and in a great area. Cow Hollow Suites is another option and may be dog friendly. There are several green spaces in the area and lots of folks have dogs. There are several small but expensive pet stores in the area (Catnip and Bones on Chestnut Street, Bella and Daisy on Union Street (NOT Square) and Bow Wow Meow on Polk. Lots of cafes, restaurants, shops etc...in the neighborhood.
All of these places are about a 10 minute drive from Chrissy Field which is a beach near the Golden Gate Bridge. Dogs are allowed off leash and you will see lots of others doing the same. On a nice day, it is beautiful with awesome views of the bridge, alcatraz etc...
Have fun!
