I have a rental car for just one night that I need to park near the W Hotel at 181 3rd Street. Does anyone know of any relatively inexpensive lots near there? The hotel charges $30 a night and I would prefer to pay less. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
Parking Question- for W Hotel
Honestly, $30/night for a hotel such as the W is quite ';reasonable';. Many of the hotels of that class charge $45-50 a day.
That said, check out this thread. There are quite a few suggestions for alternative parking in the Union Square area. Your hotel is a bit farther away than the hotel mentioned in the thread, but these are still some good ideas.

Parking Question- for W Hotel
There%26#39;s an open lot parking lot about a block south of W on Third that charges reasonable rates (it varies depending upon the time of day, events, etc., but at night it%26#39;s usually $5.) I assume you can park there overnight, but don%26#39;t leave anything in your car.
If you think you can be up by 7am, you can also find free street parking starting at 6pm down a block or two, and at 7pm right in front of the hotel. But you have to move the car by 7 am or risk getting towed!
$30 seemed too cheap, so I called the hotel and they told me parking is $45.60 including tax. I don%26#39;t know where you were told it was $30? Parking is expensive in San Francisco!
FYI -- $45.60 is $40 plus 14% tax
street parking is very difficult in this area, even for us residents who just want to drop by the W for a drink.
I usually park in the city garage at 4th %26amp; Mission. The short-term rates are quite reasonable, though I don%26#39;t know what it would cost overnight.
Otherwise I would just valet. Time is money.
Overnight at the 5th/(4th)/Mission garage is $23 (no tax)

Sundays would have free parking at meters on the nearby streets (Embarcadero excepted) (after 7pm on Sat) on the off chance that this is a weekend visit.
2nd and Howard, two outdoor lots $14 to $16 daytime, $8 evenings, the bigger lot has an attendant till 6 or 7pm. Just keep nothing of value visible. It%26#39;s a one block walk, relatively safe, walking pass a restaurant and fire station.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. They are all very helpful.
When I mentioned free street parking, I should have been more specific. You can only get those spots if you show up about 10 minutes before the hour and then patiently wait while cars behind you honk at you for stopping traffic. (you usually won%26#39;t be the only one doing this, however.) We often perform at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and that%26#39;s how we sometimes park for free. Otherwise, it%26#39;s that lot on 2nd and Howard! We have found that the prices there will vary quite a bit; during MacWorld, for example, the prices were jacked up both day and night.
