Big Sur vs South of LA

We have done both. Big Sur wins hands down!

We much prefer San Francisco to San Diego, which is where you can end up if you do the Big Sur drive. We overnighted along the way in San Simeon.

You could drive from SF back to LA in a day, if you go on the main highway, but you would need to overnight if you did the coastal route (Big Sur)

Big Sur vs South of LA

Hi Meng,

Welcome to the forum!

It%26#39;s 450 miles, 7.5 hours shortest way from SD to BS on freeways. 2.5 hours from SD to LA and 5 hours from LA to BS.

It%26#39;s another 150 miles from BS to San Francisco.

Driving coastal hw 1 takes you 2 days at least. Many things to see, so why rush?

You may visit LA for a few days and SF too.

I second Ausmum from Fremantle. I would go from LA to BS driving hw 1 in 2/3 days visiting places like Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach/Avila Beach and Hearst Castle (just once, take tour 1 and hit the road again) and other places.

San Diego is a wonderful city and a destination in itself, but in your case I would go up north.

Hi guys

Thanks for sharing your views...most helpful.

Cheers

Just wanted to explain a little more that Big Sur is NOT in southern California. When you drive from LA north to Big Sur you are going from southern to northern ca. San Diego is about 2 hrs south of LA(depending on traffic).La Jolla is a neighborhood of the city of SanDiego. It also might depend on when you are coming. If you do the drive north you might want to add some time in San Francisco. Keep on planning . California is a big state.

Thanks riffsimon...I am aware. It%26#39;s just that we are leaving fairly soon (09 MAY) but have not gotten our act together in terms of planning. There%26#39;s so much info on the internet it%26#39;s not funny..cos it sometimes serves to confuse. Anyway..we just want to do a simple free and easy drive and not be too stressed out. Wd be happy to see more ';quality'; than ';quantity';..ie if there%26#39;s one or 2 lovely spots worth hanging out.

Thanks again..been to SD and La Jolla years ago and hold lovely memories of the place.

Big Sur.

We go there as our escape from LA. The coastline is beautiful and the views are stunning.
