Decent place in hollywood for good price, need help!

Am going to LA on a stop over for 6days, can anyone help me with a good hotel to take in the sights of Hollywood for the few days but also somewhere that is habitable; came across Orange Drive Manor on tripadvisor, it has mixed reviews but the location and price are excellent, is it too good to be true?? Also getting to there (Hollywood) from LAX airport and back again, whats the best way and is there any public transport doing that route, how long journey? Im working on a budget and as its just for 5 dys dont want to be going overboard..Any help would be great, thanks

I don%26#39;t know that hostel, but it does get good reviews here. And, at $51 a night, I can%26#39;t suggest anything else.

For public transportation, please see our FAQs page at the top of the LA forums:

The Orange Drive Manor is largely a ';dormitory-style'; hostel with very inexpensive prices. However, they do have pirvate rooms with private baths for around $50 per night which is VERY reasonable for Los Angeles. The next ';step up'; are the Hollywood Celebrity and Orchid Suites Hotels for around $90-$100. All three of these are very central in Hollywood (within 3 blocks of the intersection of Hollywood Bl %26amp; Highland Av).

Hollywood %26amp; Highland has a metro rail station with access to downtown L.A. and Universal Stuidos as well as metro bus and DASH (discounted local buses) that will take you to just about anywhere in the city.

For a cheap LAX transfer, you have 2 options:

1. For a total of $4.25, take the UNION STATION FLYAWAY BUS from the waiting area in front of your terminal that%26#39;s marked with the GREEN SIGN. (Be sure the bus is the Flyaway to UNION STATION as there is more than one Flyaway bus). The bus appears every 30 minutes or so and takes about 45 minutes to reach the bus depot behind Union Station. From there, follow the crowd down the ramp and into the rear entrance of Union Station and look for the escalators down to the RED LINE metro (not the GOLD LINE!).

Take the Red Line train that%26#39;s marked NORTH HOLLYWOOD (not the one marked Wilshire/Western). Get off at Hollywood / Highland (about 21 minutes). Come up to the street. The total journey will take between 1 hour and 15 and 1 hour and 30 minutes. You will need exact change for both buses: $3 + $1.25

If you are staying at the Orange Manor Hostel, turn right onto the sidewalk and walk to Orange Drive. Turn right and the hotel will be on your right.

If you are staying at the other two hotels mentioned, turn left onto Hollywood, then turn left onto Highland Av, walk one block turn left, onto Fountain, walk one short block, and turn left onto Orchid Av. The street ends quickly. You%26#39;ll see the two hotels.

2. If you really want to be thrity, for $2.50, take the free Parking Lot C shuttle from in front of your terminal under the RED sign. Get off at the first stop in the parking lot, walk back to the sidewalk, turn left and walk to the adjacent bus depot.

Take the metro bus #439 heading toward ';downtown/Union Station'; for $1.25. Get off at the corner of Washington %26amp; Fairfax. Switch to metro bus #217 (for an additional $1.25) and get off at Hollywood %26amp; Orange (for the hostel) or Hollywood %26amp; Highland for the other two.

The journey will take about the same as the first option (between 1 hour and 15 minutes and 1 hour and 30).

The advantage to the first option is that the Flyaway bus is more comfortable than a standard metro bus and provides luggage storage. You will be guaranteed a seat on the Flyaway but not on the metro rail ride that follows or on either metro bus (in option #2).

The advantage to option #2 is that the #217 bus will drop you just 1/2 block from the hostel. In addition, if you plan to use public transit a lot while you are here, you can buy a $3 DAY PASS from the driver of the metro bus #439 and that pass will be valid for both the #439 and the #217 PLUS any other metro bus or metro rail rides you might take for the rest of your first day!

Good luck!

Thanks guys, much appreciated, in respesct to the Hotels..What would be your advise between the Orange Drive and the Celebrity? Celebrity is a bit dearer but would it be worth the extra cash in your opinion? Also a general question, as will be flying into LAX, if you were to personally advise on an area to stay in what would it be, Ive read some of your posts regarding the different areas but just to ask again.. Ive heard there are some dodge areas in Hollywood as in downtown, is Santa Monica better option?

LA is the first stop on the long journey around the globe so want to start on a good note,

any help appreciated, thanks
