Trip report day 3, 9/9

Got a fairly early start, after having several earth quake vision dreams all night long. Took the bus on Chestnut to Mama%26#39;s in Northbeach. Bus driver was apparantly having a bad day as she screeched at me ';I see those all day long';, when I showed her my passport. Then proceeded to get irrate at traffic in her way.

The line was already formed at the side of Mamas. We had about a half hour wait on a sat am. It was fun watching the cooks make the food in front of our eyes and we became hungrier by the moment.

We ordered the French toast with a side of bacon and home fries. My apple french toast with lemon butter was delish and my husband liked his with fresh berries. We got the best booth in the house, very cozy. My husband asked for and got more syrup and the order taker, an italian, could be the owner, came right over and told him to use the jam on the table, its better than the syrup, and it was. We enjoyed the food and busy atmosphere, but it was much more than we would usually pay for breakfast.

We stopped at Washington Square park for a bit and then walked thru China Town browsing and took some pix at the gate. Took the California cable car line to Embarcadero 2 and stopped in at Chevy%26#39;s Fresh Mex for margaritas and chips. I was impressed the office workers have this nice complex to spend thier lunch breaks.

We spent some time in the park and then over to the Ferry building. My husband observed a homeless guy look around and steal a peach off a vendors table. Nice shops at the Ferry but we were stuffed so went behind the building by the water and took some pix and relaxed and soaked in the view.

Took the F-line to FW and looked around a few. Hopped the 47 bus to Van Ness where we got off around Alta Vista Park and sat there for awhile. I wanted to go to the other park in Pac Heights but was too tired to deal with the steep climbs. We people and dog watched and slowly made our way over to House of Prime Rib. It was a wait even with a reservation so I snagged a seat at the bar and finally our wonderful corner booth was ready. The waitstaff puts out here as they fix the salad and potato. The meal was fab and my husband didn%26#39;t complain when the check arrived. We proceeded to walk the 8 blocks back to our room onLombard via Franklin. A homeless guy in a doorway scared me when he popped out and asked for spare change, but he was harmless.

you are a real San Franciscian if you went to House of Primb Rib. Home Plate on Lombard is good for breakfast.

Really Chumley? I actuallly got the feeling real San Franciscians arn%26#39;t that fond of meat and potatoes and gobs of dressing. They seem to adore all that small plate stuff. And really there are not that many steak houses in SF proper. Although House of Prime did seem like it was all locals and tons of asians, not a racial observation just interesting to me that they dig a big juicy slab of meat over dim sum on a Sat night.

'; I actuallly got the feeling real San Franciscians arn%26#39;t that fond of meat and potatoes';

That%26#39;s because most San Franciscans know that it%26#39;s really bad karma to kill and eat animals.

Crazy for Cali,

Thanks for the repoert. I%26#39;m glad you found some food to your liking. There are many of us who enjoy all kinds of food, be they small plates or slabs of prime rib. San Francisco has plenty of steak, it%26#39;s just really expensive. We don%26#39;t have Outback and that sort of chain. and we%26#39;re not all casting judgement on someone who wants to eat meat.

I%26#39;m catching up on your trip reports today and really enjoying them. Hope there are more.

Drummer Liz, I know your wages are higher there, but still don%26#39;t know how you guys afford to pay the rent or mortgage and still eat out etc. I guess that is the price you pay to live there though, and I can tell you love it.

Mimmy, glad you%26#39;re enjoying them. I will keep at it.

This could also simply be because of either (a) dim sum being traditionally consumed at mid-day and the early afternoon rather than during the evening hours and/or (b) Asians making up somewhere around 31% of San Francisco%26#39;s population.

Crazy4Cali,

I%26#39;m not sure how anyone else affords it, but I live in a tiny apartment downtown that%26#39;s rent controlled and spend what little I do have on going out. (In other words, I can%26#39;t really afford it either ; ^) )

That%26#39;s great Liz, so you%26#39;re right in the middle of the action. Nice that you have the rent control!

Caffiend, and or could be c) they just know what they like on a sat. night and that%26#39;s a big juicy slab of prime. My daughter has dated an asian for 4 years. He is her first and only love thus far. I actually did know dim sum was more a lunch kind of meal.
