drive from san francisco to carmel

Could someone please describe the drive from San Francisco to Carmel? I am curious to know if it is straight highway. I also want to know if it is winding on hilly terrain?

I%26#39;ll be visiting this Friday.

Thank you!

You have a number of choices. If you want the straightest route, take 101S to 156 West (be sure you don%26#39;t accidentally take 156 East, which you%26#39;ll pass about 10 miles before 156W) to the Monterey Peninsula. 156 turns into 1 S. From there, it%26#39;s s straight shot into Carmel.

If you want to drive the coast highway (Hwy 1) all the way, it%26#39;s not really winding, but it%26#39;s two lanes for a large part of the route, so will take closer to 3 hrs versus 2 hours for the straight route.

One other option is to take 280 S from SF (prettier than 101). Then you can either take 85 toward Gilroy--this will take you to 101 and then you can follow the directions above. Or you can take 280 to 880 S. This becomes 17 S, which is quite winding and goes over a pass, but is a very pretty drive through redwoods. When you get to Santa Cruz, you follow the signs for 1 South to Watsonville and Monterey.

I hope I didn%26#39;t give you too many choices! Have a good trip.
